NADI INFORMATION GUIDE

Nadi is located on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji. It boasts of a large Indian population and its Sri Siva Subramaniya temple draws pilgrims from around the world. Picturesque and laidback, Nadi is the ultimate holiday destination for sea lovers.

Climate: Nadi has a typical tropical climate. Maximum summer temperatures averages at 88ºF (31ºC) with the winter average at 84ºF (29ºC). It is coolest between May and November. November to April is the officially rainy season but it can rain at any time of the year. June to October is the best time to visit.

Food: The food is a great blend of Latin American, Japanese and Chinese culinary traditions.
Seafood lovers will not be disappointed! Delicacies like Cocody (local fish marinated in lime juice), Rourou (salad made of taro leaves), Tapioca - fried and seasoned with coconut milk and banana sauce, Duruku (a vegetable boiled and seasoned), Breadfruit, and Lovo (assortment of meat, fish and vegetables, served on a decorated platter) are sure to delight the taste buds.

Culture: Nadi has a multi-racial, multi-cultural vibe. It is home to followers of all major religions. The inhabitants are friendly and traditional and observe many customs and rituals. During the Day of Fiji, Nadi sees many exhibitions, fairs, and events. Traditional ceremonies include Lovo (a barbecue like feast where large quantities of food are cooked), Meke (song and dance to narrate legends, love stories, and history) and Yaqona (or Kava, the national drink that leads to a casual chat) ceremonies.

History and Architecture: Nadi Township was established in 1947 and during this time the Government Station was also installed on the higher grounds, many businesses were established and there was a strong movement to shift the city centre to another place, but it did not materialise. The elected system of governance was introduced in 1967 and Dr. A.H. Sahu Khan was elected Chairman of Nadi Township Board. There are many buildings and structures in Nadi that portrays its rich history, like Barra House. The Dravidian form of architecture can be seen in the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple.

Shopping: Main Street is the best place to shop in Nadi. It has stores selling clothing, books, jewellery and souvenirs. You can also pick up electronic items such as memory cards for digital cameras here.

Sightseeing in Nadi: Nadi is one of the largest towns in Fiji and has many attractions: Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, the largest Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere, Garden of the Sleeping Giant as well as many beaches, including Wailoaloa and Newtown. The local handicrafts and pictures make for great souvenirs.

Getting to and fro from the airport

You can take a local bus to Nadi centre. Many hotels and guesthouses also provide pre-arranged transport for their guests. Taxis are available outside the terminal.
