Surat, a popular town in the Indian state of Gujarat, is a commercial hub and an administrative capital of the Surat district. Previously known as Suryapur, it is located on the banks of Tapti River. Surat is the 2^nd largest city in Gujarat and 8^th largest city and 9^th largest metropolitan area in India. As per a study conducted by the City Mayors Foundation, Surat is the 34^th largest city by area and 4th-fastest developing cities. The city has received many awards and recognitions viz "best city by the Annual Survey of India's City-Systems" and "first smart IT city in India”. Sprawling on an area of 326.515 km² and elevation of 13 meters above sea level, the city currently serves home to 4.6 million people. The people of Surat speak Gujarati, Hindi and English. The city is also nicknamed as ‘Diamond City’, ‘Dream City’, ‘City Of Diamonds’, ‘Textile City of India’ and ‘Clean City’.

Summer starts from March and last till June with April and May being the hottest month with average temperature being 37 °C. Monsoon season follows summer and last from July to September with average rainfall, measuring 1,200 millimeters. Winter begins from November and last till February and January is the coldest month. In winter the temperature averages around 23 °C, making it the perfect time for tourists to plan a holiday. While Navratri and Ganesj Festivals are the major religious festivals, Makar Sankranti, the Kite festival, held in January draws a lot of tourists’ attention.

City Attractions

Surat is mostly a business and commercial center, but there are numerous heritages as well as natural attractions that are sure to keep you engaged. The city is not only important from tourism perspective but also serves as base for many sightseeing places, which are located around the city. Dumas, 16 km from Surat, is perhaps the most celebrated attraction. A charming health resort, it is a beautiful place to relax and unwind.

A popular historical attraction is Bardoli, around 34 km from Surat and it is famous for its connections with Mahatma Gandhi. Bulsar is a natural attraction known for its national park called Vansda National Park. Here tourists can sight animals like leopards, panthers, tigers and wild boars in their natural habitat. A major attraction for the Parsi community, Udava is located in the city limits of Surat.  The Dutch Gardens in Surat is another spot in Surat and is beautiful remnant of Surat's magnificent past.

Sardar Patel Museum, displays antiques carved out of wood, stone, ivory and metal along with oil painting, sandalwood work. Another significant attraction from the historical perspective is Dandi in Surat. Located around 5 km from the main city, this is the center for the production of salt and is known to be the place from where Mahatma Gandhi started his Dandi March against the British in India. The textile market in Surat is reputed as possessing the best-embroidered products of silk and brocade.

People in Surat generally savor Gujarati cuisine butt due to the cosmopolitan nature of the city, numerous multi cuisine and international restaurants are also available. Please note that most of the people are vegetarian and spicy food is preferred. Ghar, which is a type of sweet, Locho, petis, undhiyu, rasaawala khaman,Surati Khaman(Spicy),Sarasiya Khaja and surati Chinese are some of the local delicacies tourists should not miss in Surat. Please note that alcohol is banned is Gujarat and only foreign nationals and people with drinking license can purchase liquors. However, Golvad, Dumas and, Olpad are a few exceptions from where tourists can purchase alcohol, under the table. The city is exceptionally famous in Surat and best-embroidered products of silk and brocade are the major buys here. They can be best purchased at the Textile market or Government emporiums in the city. The city is also famous for its Diamonds. The country’s biggest Sari and dress market is also located here. Clothes from fashionable boutique catering for both men and women and books are also some of the things that tourists can buy in Surat.
