What to see & do
Sightseeing is always a rewarding experience in the bustling city of Bangkok with masterfully preserved temples, palaces and traditional homes. Explore Thai architecture in the Grand Palace complex and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. A blend of Ayutthaya styles, Chinese-style murals and subtle Western influences, the complex of the Grand Palace is the crowning glory of Thai architecture. Do visit the world’s largest reclining Buddha at Wat Po which dates back to the 16th century. The Wat Arun or Temple of Dawn is another impressive temple you should visit if you’re in the city. Don’t throw away your entry ticket to the Grand Palace, it gives you free access to the Dusit Palace, another impressive place to visit.
For a unique experience, rent a bicycle and cycle through the vast system of small streets and alleys. It will give you a real perspective of the city and the local way of life. Cycle along the Chao Phraya River to enjoy the impressive view of the river and its surroundings. Another way to enjoy the river and the original canals is by taking a canal tour. Take the boat all the way north up to Nonthaburi to explore laidback traditional towns and villages.
If you’re heading to Bangkok, do not miss watching a Muay Thai match at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Silom and the Ratchadamnoen Stadium in Rattanakosin. Enjoy the ambience of the match with traditional music playing during the bout and the excited cheering of the spectators. If Muay Thai is too bloody for you, try catching Bangkok’s famous drag shows.
The heart of Thai culture is food. Indulge in authentic Thai cuisine which garners worldwide acclaim for its variety, flavour and emphasis on fresh ingredients.
Pamper yourself in this truly amazing city where the ancient blends with the modern. Get a massage or learn Thai Massage at a beautiful Buddhist temple. Spend a few hours rejuvenating in style at Banyan Tree Spa Bangkok or Divana Spa.
How to get around
From the airport, visitors can take the 24-hour Airport Rail that links the airport to the city centre. Visitors would be able to reach the city centre within 20 minutes by taking the non-stop Phaya Thai Express Line. If you have the time, take the slower city train which stops at seven stations and take as little as 30 minutes to reach the heart of the city. For the budget- conscious, take the local buses which connect the airport to various destinations in Bangkok. It might not be the most comfortable ride though.
Take one of Bangkok’s brightly coloured taxis and tuk-tuks. You can flag them down from almost anywhere in central Bangkok. The extensive metro network is also a convenient way to travel to different attractions within the city.
