Ashgabat Airport – Your Entry Point to Turkmenistan
One of the 3 international airports in Turkmenistan, Ashgabat Airport is also known as Ashgabat International Airport and was earlier known as Saparmurat Türkmenbaşy International Airport. At a distance of 10 km from the city center, the airport is owned by Government of Turkmenistan and is currently operated by Turkmenistan Airlines. The airport is at an elevation of 211 meters above sea level and presently has 2 concrete runways and 1 asphalt runway measuring 3,800 meters, 2,989 meters and 900 meters, respectively. The airport currently houses office of Star Alliance and Turkish Airlines and has only 1 terminal. A new airport ‘Oguz Han’ is being constructed in Ashgabat at the cost of $2.3 billion and will include a new terminal having a handling capacity of 14 million passengers per year. The new airport will have a closed-area of 350.000 m2 which will have a VIP terminal, a passenger terminal along with a cargo terminal. The airport is scheduled to open in 2016.
The Ashgabat International Airport started operation in the year 1994 and was named as Saparmurat Türkmenbaşy International Airport, after the country's first president, Saparmyrat Niyazov. The airport was also operational during the time of Soviet rule in Turkmenistan, but during that time it was just used for domestic flights.
The current facility at the Ashgabat International Airport supports the operation of both passengers as well as cargo flights. Belavia, China Southern Airlines, flydubai, Lufthansa, S7 Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Turkmenistan Airlines and Ukraine International Airlines are the major passenger flight operators while AeroLogic, Coyne Airways, Volga Dnepr and Turkish Airlines Cargo are the cargo airlines that fly to and from the Ashgabat International Airport.
The Ashgabat International Airport is one of the major airports in the country but in spite of its great facilities and passenger friendly service, the airport has not received any award till now.

How to Check-in
The passengers planning to fly from Ashgabat International Airport can avail multiple options of check-in. Most of the airlines operating to and from Ashgabat International Airport allow the option of online check-in or mobile check-in. This is the most convenient check-in option and can be done 24 hours prior to the departure of the flight. Options of counter check-in too are available and passengers are required to report a minimum of 2 hours before departure of their international flight and 1 hour in case they are travelling to a domestic destination. Counter closes 45 minutes before departure and passengers arriving later than can be denied boarding.
Every airline has a predetermined baggage allowance and passengers should speak to their respective airline to know more about their baggage limit. Generally passengers travelling in economy class are allowed to carry 7 kg as cabin luggage and check-in one baggage not exceeding 23 kg. For the passengers in business class the limit is 12 kg for hand baggage and a maximum of 32 kg can be checked-in. Charges, as per the airline’s policy, will be applicable in case of excess luggage and can be paid at the airport. Please note the most of the airline offer the option of pre booking their excess luggage at a subsidized rate and it can be done while doing online check-in.
