Dammam Airport –King Fahd International Airport

The Dammam airport which is also known as King Fahd International airport is world’s largest airport in terms of land area. Located at a distance of 25 km northwest of the Dammam city, the airport first began its basic operations by the end of 1990, when it was used as storage for military aircraft during the Gulf war in early 1991. The architecture firm Yamasaki & Associates and Boeing Aero systems International created the site master plan.The construction of the airport began in 1983 and was completed in 1999.


The present day airport was opened for commercial traffic on 28th November 1999. It is managed by the General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Arabia and majorly serves the entire eastern region of the country. The Dammam international airport is the third major hub for the Saudia airlines. In the year 2012, the airport reported 61, 36,000 passenger movements, 55,825 airline movements and 1, 02,826 tonnes of cargo movement.


At present, there is only one terminal at the Dammam airport. The terminal is six storied where the three levels are dedicated to passenger processing. The third floor is for arriving passengers while the fourth is for boarding. Departing passengers use the sixth level. There are 11 boarding bridges out of which only 7 can be used for international flights. There are numerous counters out of which 66 are dedicated to Saudia and 44 to foreign airlines and customs and immigration occupy the remaining counters.

The Dammam airport was among the first airports in the country to offer duty free shops. Separate areas dedicated for shops specializing in the sale of gifts and passenger related good, restaurants, cafeterias, banks, indoor playgrounds, multi-story parking, smoking rooms, mosque room, travel agencies, ATM’s and currency exchange counters.
