 Bali (Denpasar) Airport

Looking for a quick getaway? Bali is one of Asia’s top destinations to head to for a weekend of fun and relaxation. Fly into Denpasar International Airport, the main gateway of the Indonesian island. The airport is situated 13km away from the capital city of Denpasar, but just a mere 2.5km away from Bali’s internationally famous Kuta beach. Also known interchangeably as Ngurah Rai International Airport, the gateway was christened after one of the country’s heroes, I Gusti Ngurah Rai, to commemorate his bravery and sacrifice for the country. First established in 1931 under the rule of the Dutch colony, Denpasar Airport was initially named Tuban Airfield after a native community and equipped with very basic facilities; just enough for flights to take off and land on an empty piece of land. Periods of unrest and dispute brought about much damage to the airport’s premises as well, but investments poured into the airport’s construction and development generated proper amenities and structures, including a new terminal building in 1949. Further expansions and extensions ever since have allowed the airport to assume its current stature of success, with growth rates constantly rising every year. Today, it enjoys one of the highest passenger traffic out of all Indonesian airports, mainly due to the constant influx of tourists all year round.

Terminals

Denpasar International Airport comprises two passenger terminals hosting distinct domestic and international operations respectively. From the airport’s newer terminal, passengers can book a flight on airlines such as Virgin Australia, Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways. There are also numerous low-cost carriers such as Garuda Indonesia offering short-haul journeys to domestic and regional destinations from the domestic terminal. Both buildings are interconnected by the Festival Plaza which hosts an occasional performance or two; and passengers can cross over to view the performance at their convenience.

Services and Facilities

Amenities provided by Denpasar International Airport offer passengers convenience and comfort, eliminating unnecessary worries that may jeopardise their otherwise ideal holiday or getaway. When hunger pangs strike, passengers can treat themselves to a snack or perhaps a meal at the cafes and restaurants. Retail options are also presented at the airport, from duty free shopping to smaller stores peddling souvenirs and even batik clothing. Passengers can also utilise the banking facilities to get their hands on some cash if they are running short. Flying into Bali without an already planned itinerary? Fret not! Just pay a visit to the information counters located within the airport premises to find out more about the exciting adventures lying ahead of you, and make a reservation with the accommodation of your choice while you are at it.
