Jetstar – Australia's No. 1 Low Fares Airline or Low Fares, Good Times (Fly Away)

A low cost airline of Australia, Jetstar is also known as Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd and is a subsidiary of Qantas. The headquarters of the airline is in Melbourne, Australia and Melbourne Airport serves as the major hub of the airline as well. Brisbane Airport, Sydney Airport, Gold Coast Airport and Cairns Airport are secondary hubs of the airline and Perth Airport, Auckland Airport and Adelaide Airport are the focus cities. The airline operates an extensive domestic network as well as regional and international services and competes with Virgin Australia and its fully owned low-cost subsidiary Tigerair Australia. Qantas Frequent Flyer is the programme run by the airline for its passengers.


Established by Qanta Air in 2003 as the airline’s low cost airline, the airline was re-launched under the present brand name. The first domestic passenger service began on 25th May 2005 and the first international flight service commenced on 1st December 2005 to Christchurch in New Zealand. Originally the airline was headquartered on the grounds of Avalon Airport near Melbourne, and started flying out of Avalon Airport in mid-2004, but has since relocated its registered office to the Melbourne CBD.


The current fleet of Jetstar includes 53 Airbus A320, 6 Airbus A321, 4 Airbus A330-200 and 8 Boeing 787-7, which total up to 71 aircrafts. Qantas placed an order for 110 A320s in 2011, with 11 allocated to a planned new Qantas Group premium airline in Asia (which is still not established) and 99 to the various Jetstar-branded airlines. The order consisted of 32 classic A320s and 78 A320neos, with scope to convert some to A321s.


The airline has made significant place for itself in Australia’s aviation sector for which it has won many awards and accolades.

Routes and Destinations

The airline currently operates to 19 domestic destinations and 17 international destinations in 7 countries across Asia, North America and Oceania. The company plans to expand to the U.S. West Coast and to Southern Europe after the delivery of its Boeing 787s.
