From the airport, the raw energy of the Sofia city is only 12 km away which can be accessed through public transport system, taxis, car services etc. Also, the recent opening of underground line makes the economical intermodal connections among the bus stations, central railway and the airport.

SOF airport meets the modern commerce trends by means of modern infrastructure and advanced technologies.

History

It was during the late 1930s; the airport was constructed to begin with. The airport replaced the small one at Bozhuriste. The airport facilities were utilized by the military during the World War II when the current southern passenger terminal was finished constructing. However, it was only opened in 1947.

By the end of 1960s, the terminal had a capacity to hold about 600,000 passengers. In the springtime of 1968, the further construction and development work began. The west side of the building was improved with the construction of international arrival handling section in 1975.  The eastern domestic arrival section was also expanded and the government handling section was taken out to replace a VIP treatment section. Moreover, to the east the apron area was enlarged and exclusive taxiways was opened. Towards the end of 1970s the airport was operating flights for about three million passengers annually.

SOF Airport went through an overall update in 2000. The international terminal was shifted and the central international departure section was exclusively designed to meet the requirements with the modern times. The more development plans were to be invested and the following year saw the work commencing ahead. The brand new runway was fully completed in 2006 and inaugurated in 27th December. The further improvement includes Sofia Metro extension, inaugurated in 2015.

Despite the efforts, SOF Airport is criticized to be short for world class air freight services, few accessibility problems and environmental issues as well as noise effluence. Another concern is its historical operational capability in all weather conditions.
