Surat Airport, situated around 11 km south-west of the city centre, is a domestic airport. Sprawling over a total area of 312 hectares, the airport currently has scheduled flight services and also caters to private aircrafts. Managed and operated by the Airports Authority of India, the airport also serves as a base of a Flying training school.
Earlier the airport was under the management of Gujarat Government. In 2003, it was transferred to the Airports Authority of India for better modernization and development. Perched at a height of 16 ft above sea level, the airport runway is 2250 m long & 45 m wide. Night landing facilities, Instrumental Landing System as well as navigational facilities such as DVOR/DME & NDB are also available at the airport. The airport is connected directly or indirectly by low cost airlines to different cities in India. These airline service providers include SpiceJet, Air India and Jet Airways.
The new terminal building at Surat Airport covers a total area of 8,500 square meters and has the capacity of handling up to 240 passengers in an hour. It features two aerobridges, two elevators, two escalators, a 120 seat lounge and is equipped with modern services such as CCTV cameras, two baggage carousals, a hand baggage X-ray machine etc. There are 6 check-in counters and 2 security counters available at the airport.
