Calgary (YYC) is Canada’s aviation hub. Its main business is overseeing arrival and departure of passengers, goods and services. The management understands that people have various choices. The focus is thus to make this airport the customer’s choice. It is a gate away to every possibility and is a place where commerce and purpose connect.

It is the main access point to the national park. Passenger service is more extensive. Calgary airport authority manages the airport since inception. Daily nonstop flights to Asia and Europe are available. YYC is approximately 15km from Calgary City. One can easily access it via Highway 2.

Calgary YYC has four runways and handles 14 million customers annually. The airport has three level passenger terminals. This makes it a West Jet hub to serve both domestic and international flights. Connecting and direct flights are available to other destinations.

The airport was founded in 1914 and it is located in Bowness. This is 10km away from the city. Initially, this airport was made of a ramshackle hut being a grass airstrip. This served as a terminal building and a hanger. In 1928, the then local authority rebranded it to a municipal airport. Until now, some of the hangers of those times are still in use. In 1938, it relocated to the present location in North East Calgary. The Federal Transport Department officially took over in 1940 for purposes of war until 1949. This is when the runway expansion took place. Up to five war time hangers and four runways were operational.

In 1956, Canada opened one of the modern air terminals at the south corner of the airport. With the age jet, this terminal became obsolete. Due to lack of resources to develop, Calgary sold the airport to Canada at USD 2 million. This was a move to try to assimilate this airport to the demanding jet age requirements. In 1992, Calgary Airport authority took over again for the expansion and operation of the airport. Today, YYC is one of the most excellent airports and is setting standards for others in the industry.
