Serving as the primary gateway of its home city, Madurai Airport sits approximately 14km away from the city centre of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The airport formerly functioned as a military base during its early years during the Second World War, but has taken on the status of a commercial airport ever since. Having undergone extensive renovation and upgrades too, the airport has also been revamped with modern touches and improved facilities to better handle high capacities of air and passenger traffic at any one time. These include sufficient check-in stations, immigration stations, customs and security stations, as well as three conveyor belts for baggage and seven aircraft stands.

Operations are handled through one main integrated passenger terminal which encompasses both domestic and international flights. However, there are plans to utilise the older terminal exclusively for cargo operations. Madurai Airport can be found as part of flight routes belonging to airlines such as Air India, Jet Airways, Spicejet and Mihin Lanka, comprising destinations from domestic Chennai and Mumbai, to international Colombo. How to get around within Madurai

From Madurai Airport, passengers looking to get into the city centre can catch a taxi for a convenient and safe way of getting downtown. If not, you could hop onto a public bus which will ferry you from the airport into the heart of the city, stopping at the highly accessible Periyar Bus Stop where you will be able to connect with pretty much anywhere within Madurai.

Should you need to connect with neighbouring cities within the region, train services are your best bet, especially to major destinations like Chennai or Bangalore. Services are frequent, and night trains accompanied with sleeping arrangements are available.

Within the city proper, visitors can get around efficiently by public bus, cabs, or auto-rickshaw pick-ups. The latter promises a thrilling ride, but drivers are infamous for quoting high prices if they realise you are not from the region. Do remember to decide on a reasonable final fare with your driver first before departing for your destination.

Other equally stunning temples that are worth seeing are the Thirupparankundram Temple and the Koodal Azhagar Temple for their impressive build-ups as well. Mahatma Gandhi has a museum dedicated to him in Madurai -- the Gandhi Memorial Museum. Pay a visit to the museum and look back on his life through the materials on display.
