PARO INFORMATION GUIDE
Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, the charming town of Paro in western Bhutan is known to house the world’s most difficult commercial airport (also Bhutan’s only airport). It is also known for the presence of the striking Rinpung Dzong, Bhutan’s most important fortress-monastery.
Climate:Paro weather is generally pleasant, thus making it accessible and enjoyable round the year. Summer brings warmth and greenery while winter sees light layer of snow.
Food:Food favourites in Bhutanese Paro cuisine include lentils, ferns, rice and meat stews and soups, Zow Shungo, Ema Datshi (considered the national dish of Bhutan), Jasha Maru, Phaksha Paa, Thukpa, Bathup, momos, Juma, Shabalay, Khabzey, Shakam Eezay and fried rice. Popular beverages include beer, Ara (locally brewed rice wine), black tea, milk tea and butter tea.
Culture:Buddhism is Paro’s main religion, with each district/valley dominated by a ‘Dzong’ (administrative and religious centre). Preservation of Bhutan culture is called ‘Driglam Namzha’, which dictates teachings, etiquette, cuisine, clothing and way of life. Tsechus (annual religious Buddhist festivals) are important, especially in the end when a huge tapestry (Thongdrel) is unfurled in the Dzong’s courtyard before sunrise on the final day, which is said to bring spiritual liberation. Monks join the monastery between ages 6 and 9.
History and Architecture:The main street of Paro sees traditional architecture. Notably important architectural structures in and around Paro are the 15th-century and 7th-century temples of Dungtse Lhakhang and Kyichu Lhakhang, Ugyen Perli Palace, the ornate Olathang Hotel, the ruins of the fortress monastery Drukyel Dzong and the famous Cliffside monastery of Paro Taktsang.
Shopping:The Sunday Market, Vajrayana Art Gallery, Chencho Handicrafts, and Made in Bhutan are some of the best shops to buy local handicrafts and artefacts in Paro.
Sightseeing in Paro:Apart from the above, the National Museum of Bhutan is a must-see. Other places include the Chele La Pass and Tachogang Lhakhang Bridge. The Capital of Bhutan, Thimphu is just a 60 km drive, where the Tashichho Dzong is a must-visit.
Getting to and fro from the airport:
Bhutan tourism has picked up in the last few years, having seen a good influx of tourists. Since there are no railways, tourists need to take normal taxis or hire rental cars to get from the airport to any of Bhutan’s cities.
