MALAGA INFORMATION GUIDE

Malagalies in the Province of Málaga, in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, Spain. It is a beautiful city and lies on the southernmost tip of Europe.

 

Climate: The climate is subtropical-Mediterranean with very mild winters and hot summers. Málaga has sunshine throughout the year, with an average of 300 days of sunshine and only about 50 days of rain in the year. The average temperature during the day in December- February is 17–18 °C. The summer season lasts for about eight months, from April to November with an average temperature of 20 °C.


Food: The food in Malaga is delicious, so don’t miss out on sampling thepescaíto frito (deep-fried fish), migas (crumbs appetiser), porra (tomato and dried bread soup) and ajoblanco (bread, almond and garlic soup). They are some of the traditional dishes of Málaga’s cuisine.  Also, try the Berzas which are cabbages typical of Andalusia and Málaga, along with chickpeas. Other famous dishes include the white garlic soup, almond biscuit, ronda style vegetable stew, the porra antequerana and the gachas which is a meal of cooked flour with water and salt. It can also be garnished with milk, honey or other dressings.

 

Culture: Most of the population of Málaga follows Roman Catholicism as its religion. Protestants also have a presence in Málaga- one of the seven congregations of the Reformed Churches in Spain is based here. The Holy Week celebration, the August Málaga Fair (Feria de Málaga) and the Málaga Film Festival are the three major events held in the city. The Holy Week of Málaga has been celebrated for over five centuries now. The processions start on Palm Sunday and continues until Easter Sunday. 

 

History and Architecture: Málaga's history goes back about 2,800 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world.  It was founded by the Phoenicians as Malaka at about 770 BC. It was under the Carthage rule from the 6th century BC and then from 218 BC, it was ruled by the Roman Empire as Malaca. After the fall of the empire, it was under Islamic domination as Mālaqah for 800 years, but in 1487 it again came under Christian rule in the Reconquista. The oldest architectural remains in the city are the walls of the Phoenician city in the cellar of the Museo Picasso Málaga. The Roman theatre of Málaga, which dates from the 1st century BC, is also an important building. Do visit the Church of Santiago, which is an example of Gothic vernacular Mudéjar, the style that evolved after the mixing the styles of Christian and Islamic architecture.

 

Shopping: Dueto tourism, shopping has received a boost in Malaga.El Corte Ingles is a well-known shopping centre here. It is a multi-storey store with trendy clothes, perfumes, shoes, home ware, furniture and food. Calles Marques de Larios is another one of Malaga's popular shopping spots where a majority of Spanish fashion is found. Women can head to Mango, Marqués de Larios 1 that offers quality trendy wear. For men's fashion, there is Massimo Dutti, Marqués de Larios 4, where stylish and elegant outfits can be purchased.

 

Sightseeeing in Malaga: Head to theLa Concepción, botanical and historical garden, Church of the Sacred Heart, San Felipe Neri Church, Church of the Holy Martyrs, Atarazanas Market, Palm grove and Muelle Uno, Port of Málaga, Anglican Cemetery of St. George, San Miguel Cemetery, La Malagueta bullring and the Pedregalejo, the old fishing district.

 

Getting to and fro from the airport

The airport is one of the oldest and one of the first ones in Spain. It is connected to Málaga City and surrounding areas through a transportation hub, which includes the bus system, suburban trains and taxis.
