Climate
The city of Guangzhou experiences three seasons - winter, summer, and monsoon. The summers are almost unbearable due to their humidity; the winters are tolerable with pleasant temperatures and less humidity; the monsoon is long continuing from April to September. Since the city is located just above the Tropic of Cancer, the temperatures can turn unpredictable and extreme in nature.
Food
The city is also known as Canton and here is where you should try some of the world’s most authentic Cantonese cuisine, which is a part of the Eight Culinary Traditions of their national cuisine. Some things you mustn’t miss include lou fo tong (slow-cooked soup), shell fish preparations such as lobster and shrimp, Wonton noodles, Chow mein, Little Pot rice, Siu mei - a style of cooking with different types of meat. Cantonese cuisine usually revolves around meat preparations. Options for vegetarians are scarce.
Culture
Most people hire a translator while traveling in Guangzhou as half the population speaks Cantonese, while the rest speak Mandarin. Buddhism is the most followed religion. The city’s eight famous tourist spots, known as the Eight Sights of Guangzhou, are representation of the city’s cultural evolution. Sports is an important part of the city’s culture; it has previously hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup and also the Asian Games in 2010. The city maintains sister city agreements with as many as 23 cities.
History and Architecture
The city was an important port since its finding. It was ruled by both the Qin and Han dynasties. For a few years, the Japanese also ruled the city after bombing it. Since it was always an important port, it attracted many foreigners from as early as the tenth century. The cities architecture retains old Chinese elements, but has transformed after being the host for the Asian Games. Most of the buildings are styled in modern styles and are nothing short of architectural marvels.

The city is nothing short of a shopping paradise for one and all. Visit Baima Market - the most famous wholesale market for clothes situated opposite Guangzhou Railway Station. For those who love bargaining, Beijing Road and Mouse Street are two places you must visit. You will find everything from electronics to clothes in wholesale rates.
