TEHRAN INFORMATION GUIDE
Tehran is the capital of Iran. A bustling metropolis, the city is dotted with swanky shopping malls, world class restaurants, and luxury hotels on one hand, and exotic bazaars and historic buildings on the other.
Climate: Tehran has a semi-arid, continental climate. Summers are hot and dry with average temperatures of 93°F (34°C) to 109°F (43°C). Winters are very cold with temperatures averaging 29°F (-1°C) to 47°F (8°C).
Food: Be sure to try out the local fare like Khoresht (lamb, chicken, duck, or pheasant cooked in a sauce of onions, ground walnuts, and pomegranate molasses), Pilaf (pulao), Chelow Kabab (lamb marinated in lemon juice or yogurt, onions, saffron, and grilled over a hot fire), and Dough (a yogurt and salted water preparation).
Culture: The city is a beautiful showcase of Iranian culture. It retains ties with its traditions and customs by observing a clutch of festivals like Nowruz (celebration of spring), Sofreye Haft Sin (destruction of sin), Sizdah Bedar (festival of joy and solidarity), Mehregan (thanksgiving festival), Jashne Sade (victory of light over dark), and many more.
History and Architecture: The region used to be occupied by the Rey. It was destroyed by the Mongols in the early 13th century. In 1796, Agha Mohammed Khan made it Iran's new capital due to its proximity to Iran's territories in the Caucasus. In the 1920s and 1930s, the city saw mass migration of people, a trend that continues to this day. The city is known for its historic mosques, churches, synagogues, and Zoroastrian fire temples, while Azadi Tower and Milad Tower are modern landmarks.
Shopping: From traditional bazaars to modern shopping malls, Tehran has it all. The Bazaar of Tehran and Tajrish Bazaar are the biggest traditional bazaars in Tehran. Valiasr, Shariati, and Mirdamad offer a great range of shopping options. Big malls like Tiraje and Hyperstar are not far behind.
Sightseeing in Tehran: Tehran is home to more than 50 museums including Golestan Palace. Other must see places are National Museum of Iran, Carpet Museum of Iran, the Time Museum, Museum of the Islamic Period, Abrisham Bridge, Chitgar Lake, Police Palace, Tochal Skiing Resort, and Alborz Mountains.
