ST. PETERSBURG PULKOVO INFORMATION GUIDE

With two name changes, the city can be confused easily with Petrograd or Leningrad, its earlier names. In 1991, the city got its name back. The second-largest city in the country, St. Petersburg is famous for many things including its mesmerizing sights, freezing temperatures, and a plethora of monuments for the tourists.

Climate

The city’s average temperature is 5.8 °C with it being under snow for at least 118 days from December to March. Its river - the Neva, freezes in winter and breaks only around April. Rains are also not uncommon in the city, spanning across summer. Basically, the city is divided into two seasons - winter and summer, long and short respectively.

Food

The city doesn’t have a unique cuisine of its own but there are over 4,000 restaurants that serve a diverse range of food from the traditional to the contemporary. There are imperial houses converted into restaurants, such as the DOM. You can also opt for cheaper options of local restaurants serving pocket-friendly cuisine. Since it’s a cold country, most of the staple food includes meat. However, you’ll find plenty of options in familiar outlets too here.

Culture

Whether you talk about music, literature, or film, St. Petersburg has seen it all and treasured it all. Even today, you’ll find glimpses of a rich era of cultural blossoming hidden here and there in the city. The city’s population is diverse (80% Russian) and the average age is 40 years.

History and Architecture

Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond is called the chief architect of the city and was hired by none another than Peter I himself. The French architect modeled the city’s base along a line of nurseries along the river Neva and had an almost perfect geometric design turn into reality. The oldest parts of the city have peculiar onion-shaped domes, a stark opposite of what you find in contemporary parts of the city.

Shopping

There is no dearth for a shopper in St. Petersburg, especially when it comes to souvenirs. Since most of the city is almost-closed during winter months, there aren’t local flea markets or plazas as found in any other city around the world. The city also has an online shopping directory. You can use the directory to find anything from bookstores to groceries.

Sightseeing in St. Petersburg

Catherine Palace and Park (Pushkin), Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad), State Russian Museum, Peterhof State Museum Preserve, State Academical Mariinskiy Theatre, Grand Maket Russia Interactive Museum, Pavlovsk Palace and Park and Church of the Savior on Blood are some of the places you must visit when you are in St. Petersburg.

Getting to and fro from the airport

The airport is well-connected by bus and local transport. Tourists usually use buses booked for groups to travel around the city and its neighboring areas. Similarly, coming to the airport is mostly in buses. Taxis are available in abundance. The station has a special ‘to the airport’ exit that allows tourists to directly get off and take another mode of transport directly to the airport.
