Little Paris, as Bucharest is known, is famous for its elegant buildings and sophisticated culture. The capital of Romania, the city lies north of the Danube River.
Climate: Bucharest has a humid continental climate. Due to the Romanian Plains, its winters can get windy. Winter temperatures often dip below 0 °C. In summer, the average temperature is 23 °C in July and August. Temperatures frequently reach 35 to 40 °C in mid-summer in the city. Average rain and humidity during summer are low, although there are occasional heavy storms.
Food: The cuisine of Romania has been influenced by many other cuisines like the Greeks, the Turks, the Russians, the Bulgarians and the Hungarians. It is known to be salty and high in fat, but it is undoubtedly very tasty. Do try the traditional dishes like the saramale or stuffed cabbage rolls, the chiftele which are large fried meatballs spiced with herbs and garlic and the mitetei which is made of minced pork, lamb and beef. The chifetele can be eaten as such or marinated in tomato sauce with mashed potatoes or rice as side dish. Also, try the toba which is pig’s organs, pig skin, ears, fat and aspic, wrapped in a pig’s own stomach and then simmered.
Culture: Bucharest comprises of 96% Romanians and other significant ethnic groups such as Roma Gypsies, Hungarians, Jews, Turks, and the Chinese. The main religion followed is Romanian Orthodox. The city has a vibrant cultural scene in visual arts, performing arts and an interesting nightlife. The city has two internationally renowned ethnographic museums- the Museum of the Romanian Peasant and the open-air Village Museum.
History and Architecture: The city was known as the "Citadel of București" in 1459 and was the residence of the famous Wallachian Prince Vlad III the Impaler. Later, it came under the Ottomans who appointed Greek administrators to run the town. Bucharest became finally the permanent location of the Wallachian court after 1698.
The city centre is a mixture of medieval, neoclassical and art nouveau buildings, as well as 'neo-Romanian' buildings dating from the 20th century. The mostly utilitarian Communist-era architecture dominates most southern boroughs. A key landmark in the city is Arcul de Triumf, built in 1935 and modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
Shopping: There are plenty of shopping centers, supermarkets, open-air markets, fashion boutiques, antique, art and souvenir stores, malls and bookstores which cater to a large range of shopping tastes and needs. The historical center of Bucharest, crossed by the locally celebrated Lipscani Street, is next to Calea Victoriei, which a wonderful place to shop. Also, try the Băneasa Shopping City and the Unirea shopping centers to pick up the local souvenirs.
Sightseeing in Bucharest: Do enjoy sightseeing in the city. ThePalace of the Parliament, Romanian Athenaeum, Palace of Justice, Grozăvești Bridge and the Victory Avenue are the must visits.
Getting to and fro from the airport
The 780 Express line connects the international airport to the Gara de Nord railways station. The buses run day and night and stop in from of the arrivals and departures terminals. On-demand taxis are also available and can be booked through a touch screen device in the public area of the airport. The fast taxi station is located at the exit of the arrivals terminal on the upper deck on the first floor. Trains also connect the airport and the station and passengers can reach the Airport stop via shuttle buses.
