Vilnius is the capital and the largest city of Lithuania. It is situated in a valley at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. Picturesque, vibrant, arty and historic, the city is a favourite of culture vultures and history lovers.
Climate: Vilnius has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. In winter, temperatures average −4.9 °C (23 °F) and in summer, they hover around 17°C (63 °F). Summer is the best time to visit the city.
Food: During a sojourn in Vilnius, do sample the dark rye bread, white curd cheese, and honey. You can also savour delectable fare like Barsciai (beet soup), Skilandis (smoked chopped meat), Pyaragas (cakes), andNykstukas (chocolate coated curd cheese). The local vodkas are worth sampling too.
Culture: Ever since the Middle Ages, the city has been hailed as a cultural centre. It maintains its lofty reputation with the Philharmonic Society Hall, Opera and Ballet Theatre, Youth Theatre and Academic Drama Theatre, seven art galleries and a sprawling modern art centre. The city also hosts many commercial fairs and exhibitions annually.
History and Architecture:The region used to be a castle site in 1253. It became a flourishing capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania under the Grand Duke Gediminas. After him, the city saw turbulent times during the 14th century. Sigismund August moved his court there in 1544 and it saw a period of rapid development. In 1795, Vilnius was annexed by the Russian Empire. During World War I and II, it was occupied by the German Army. The city is known for its architecture that’s an amalgam of diverse styles and eras, from Neoclassical to Baroque to Gothic. Vilnius Cathedral, St. Anne's Church, and the Gate of Dawn are the notable examples.
Shopping: Visiting traditional markets called Turgus is an experience to remember. Akropolio Blusu Turgus is a bustling flea market. You can pick up great souvenirs like natural Lithuanian linen, glazed ceramic bowls, wooden toys, antiques, and decorative glassware. For branded goods, head to Akropolis Shopping Centre.
