Jammu is the winter capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. As it is the gateway to all routes leading to other locations further north like the Kashmir valley, Vaishno Devi and Laddakh, Jammu has a regular and constant stream of tourists passing through it. Besides earning its revenue from tourism, Jammu is also famous for its basmati rice, popular within India and internationally, and for its cottage industry of carpet making.
Climate
Visitors traveling from Pune to Jammu should know that the Jammu has extreme temperatures in the summer and winter months. The average high in the summer, between April and June, hits about 40°C and the lows in winter, between October and March, drop to around 8°C. The monsoon lasts from June to September, but Jammu usually receives some rainfall in the winter months too. The best time to visit Jammu is between October and March.
Cuisine
Pune to Jammu tourists can experience Jammu through its street food. Try the various chaats. Gol gappas, chole bhature, and rajma kulche are known all over India. Things to do
Vaishno Devi Temple, located in Katra about 42 kms outside Jammu city, is a pilgrimage site for devotees and one of the key places to visit in Jammu.
Those interested historical architecture must visit the Bahu Fort on the banks of the river Tawi. This ancient imposing lime and sandstone structure houses a Mahakali temple built of marble. Visitors to Bahu Fort can also enjoy the sprawling Bagh-e-Bahu with its terrace gardens, sculptures, and fountains.
The Amar Mahal Palace, the residence of the Dogra dynasty which ruled Jammu, is made of beautiful red sand stone and has been converted into a museum. It has many antiques from the Dogra dynasty period including books, paintings and a golden throne. For more insight into the history of Jammu visit the Dogra Art Museum which has over seven thousand articles of historical significance such as sculptures, manuscripts jewellery, and costumes. One can plan a visit to Tulip Garden in Jammu for surprising pleasant experience.
