What to See & Do
The Jammu region is nestled between the hilly Himalayan Mountains and the Punjab plains. It is also locally called Duggardesh, and is one of the most significant subdivisions of the state out of three. The city of Jammu is the winter capital and largest city in the northernmost state of India. Tourists are drawn to this lovely cultural city, and often visit Jammu to explore the Kashmir valley.
At the heart of Jammu lies the majestic Raghunath Mandir, a temple dedicated to the revered Shri Rama who is revered by Hindus. The interior walls of the temple are adorned with gold, and galleries showcase sacred saligrams (ammonite fossils) symbolising deities of the Hindu pantheon. Another significant religious site is the Gupawala Mandir, a small labyrinth of cave-tunnels comprising glitteringly colourful Krishna and Shiva caves.
Marvel at the raja’s canopied gold throne in the Amar Mahal, a grand castle-style tower whose design reveals a distinct European influence. View the scenery from above with a cocktail as a refresher, in the air-conditioned Polo Lounge bar of the Hari Niwas Palace Hotel. Visit the Mubarak Mandi, the former palace of Jammu’s royalty in the 19th century. In the palace, marvel at the artefacts in the Dogra Art Gallery, housed in the Durbar Hall. The ancient bronzes, armaments, instruments, 9th-century carvings and Kushan coins are interesting sights to behold. Explore the Bahu Fort, said to be the oldest edifice in Jammu. The imposing fort stands on a rock face on the left bank of River Tawi. Walk through the terraced garden, Bagh-e-Bahu, constructed in addition to the fort surrounding the main building. The fort, along with the Bahu temple, commands a great scenic view of the city.
