The Coimbatore International Airport is located in the Peelamedu area, which is around 11 km from the main city. Earlier known as Coimbatore Civil Aerodrome, it is the 18th largest airport in India in terms of total passenger movement and 13th largest airport in terms of cargo handled. During the year from April 2012 to March 2013, the airport received 1,297,804 passenger with 12,846 aircraft movements.
The operations at the airport commenced in the year 1940 when it was a civil aerodrome associated with Indian Airlines. The airport was modernized with an additional runway and was reopened in the year 1987 after its shutdown for expansion in the early 1980’s. It was only on 2nd October 2012, that the airport was awarded the status of an International airport by the prime minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. The plans of expanding the airport are in pipeline which includes another runway to handle wide bodied aircrafts, extension of the existing terminals, construction of a parallel taxiway to the runway and two more parking bays.
There is only 1 terminal at the Coimbatore airport which serves for both domestic as well as international passengers. There is a separate cargo terminal too at the airport. Free trolleys, wheel chair, medical center, aid treatment to heart patients, child care room, assistance for aged and challenged passengers and facilities of lost and found baggage are available. Passengers have to pay for availing the facility of resting room for transit passengers. Duty free shopping, general taxi service, eating places and shops too are available.
