The Nagpur Airport, which is known as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is a custom airport located 8 km south west of Nagpur city. Named after the chief architect of Indian constitution, Bharat Ratna Dr Babasahed Ambedkar, the airport was earlier known as Sonegaon airport. Sprawling on an area of 1,460 acres of land, this airport also serves the AFS Nagpur of the Indian Air Force along with the Nagpur Flying Club.Nagpur airport has also been awarded for Indra system which is used for effective and precise Air traffic control.


The Nagpur airport handles around 4,000 passengers per day and caters to 6 Domestic Airlinesand 1 International Airline connecting Nagpur to Sharjah. According to the traffic statistics from April 2011 – March 2012, the Nagpur airport received 1,415,739 passenger movements with 14,961 aircraft movements. The present integrated terminal building at the airport was inaugurated on 14th April, 2008. Covering an area of 17,500 sq mt, the airport can handle 400 arriving and 400 departing domestic passengers and 150 arriving and 150 departing international passengers during peak hours. There are 2 conveyor belts each in Departure, the Domestic Arrival Hall and in the International Arrival Hall. The airport is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and boasts of central air-conditioning, passenger bridges with Visual Docking Guidance System, escalators, lifts, baggage conveyor system in Arrival and Departure Halls, CCTV, FIDS and other such modern passenger amenities of international standards. The new terminal includes 20 check-in counters and 20 immigration counters serving passengers taking low cost international flights to Nagpur.

The plan to expand the existing airport at Nagpur is underway and once it is complete it will be instrumental in reducing the load on other busy airports in India by diverting the cargo as well as passenger traffic to Nagpur.
