Stuttgart Airport

Experience the Amazing Blend of Culture and Cars via Stuttgart (STR) Airport

Situated in the capital city of the state, Baden boasts the Stuttgart Airport. It was inaugurated by Manfred Rommel, former mayor of Stuttgart. The airport is ranked at sixth in terms of its flight activities. Stuttgart Airport let through approximately about 6 million passengers only in the year 2012. The airport gets busy with flight to numerous cities of Europe and is a vital hub connecting Germanwings. Also, it provides long flight services to Abu Dhabi, Atlanta and popular vacation destinations all round European continent.

This airport is situated at a distance of 8 miles displacement to Southern Stuttgart. It stretches out on the borderline of Stuttgart and small towns, Leinfelden-Echterdingen and Filderstatd which lies in close proximity.

During the World War II, the location for Stuttgart was then Boblingen Airport. The airport was invaded by US Air Force and then returned back in 1948 to German authorities.

After the event, expansion work was commenced immediately. The German authorities extended the runway to 1800m and by 1996 it was a 3,345m long runway.

IN 2004, the terminal was constructed and replaces the former 1938 one. Now it boasts four terminals and has a maximum limitation of about 12 million travelers.

In November 2013, the former mayor passed away and it was proposed that the airport to be named after him.   However, it became a controversial issue as locals disputed that he was the descendent of Erwin Rommel. Manfred Rommel was a highly respect senior for the intercultural issues for which he earned recognition. Nevertheless, it was decided that the airport to be called Flughafen Stuttgart from then on.

The failed negotiation with United Airlines led to draw the conclusion that the route from Newark to Stuttgart would be immediately stopped. It was during the autumn of 2014. This led to only one long flight service to Atlanta. On the other hand, another long flight service to Abu Dhabi was negotiated with Air Berlin at the end of the same year.

The Stuttgart Airport provides its runway for many operational aircrafts. The fleets take off for several destinations all over the world. Among which are Aegan airline, Aeroflot airlines, Air Berlin, Air Cairo, Air France, Air Serbia, Arkia Israel airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Czech Airlines and Delta Air lines. Others include easyJet, Germanwings, Iberia Express, Swiss International Airlines, Turkish airlines and Vueling.

·         In 2014, it received the award for the best airport in the categories of (5-10) million passengers
