Climate

History and Architecture

Auckland was inhabited by Maori people since 1300 or before. However, there were as many as only 20,000 people in the area at any given time. Even these came due to the rich, fertile land. The Europeans came in 1800s and named the land in the name of their royalty. Slowly and steadily from 1940 onwards, the city (read: country) started gaining independence. This influenced the architecture and other cultural elements such as language in the city. The city’s architecture is based on architectural innovations that happened in Europe, with buildings representing Baroque, Neoclassical, and Georgian styles even. Today, the architecture has taken a turn towards modern engineering.

Shopping

There are plenty of shopping malls in the city, mostly concentrated around middle and/or outer suburbs; Sylvia Park and Westfield Albany are the largest. Weekend flea markets at Otara and Avondale will give you an opportunity to shop for stuff in bulk at competitive prices.
