The cuisine is heavily influenced by Chinese Peranakan, Malay cuisine, Sundanese and Javanese cuisine, but also includes Indian, Arabic and European colonial influences. Do try the popular local dishes like Soto Betawi which is made from chunks of beef meat and offals in rich and spicy cow's milk or coconut milk broth. Other popular Betawi dishes include soto kaki, nasi uduk, kerak telor (spicy omelette), nasi ulam, asinan, ketoprak etc.

Culture: The Betawi are the original inhabitants of the city and are the descendants of the people living in Batavia from the 18th–19th century. The Jakarta dialect (Bahasa Jakarta) is based on the Betawi language. The locals celebrate many festivals such as the Jalan Jaksa Festival or Kemang Festival which showcase Betawi arts. The city has many museums in Central Jakarta Merdeka Square area, Jakarta Old Town and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.

History and Architecture: Jakarta was a part of the Sundanese kingdom of Tarumanagara, one of the oldest Hindu kingdoms in Indonesia.  After its decline, it became part of the Kingdom of Sunda. The Dutch ships arrived in Jayakarta in 1596 and they were followed by the English East India Company where they were allowed to build a trading post. This site became the centre of English trade in Indonesia until 1682. Dutch colonial architecture is seen in many old buildings, villas, structures and churches. Some Chinese style and Islamic style buildings are also present in the city. The Dutch style later gave way to the Indische Stijl, which was more in line with the local climate and culture.
