CHARLOTTE INFORMATION GUIDE

History and Architecture: Charlotte was founded in 1768 and named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England. It remained a tiny village for many decades. In 1780, British general Lord Cornwallis tried to occupy it, but was met with local resistance. The discovery of gold in the 1800s turned around the fortunes of the city. After the civil war, the city became a cotton and railroad hub and saw rapid urbanisation and expansion. The city’s architecture ranges from the Old World (Presbyterian Church, Fourth Ward Neighbourhood) and the ultra modern (Bank of America Stadium, UNC Charlotte Centre City Building).

Shopping: From high end shopping to high street delights, from swanky malls to local markets, Charlotte has something for every kind of shopper. Waxhaw District, Concord Mills, Ballantyne Village, and Birkdale are some of the popular shopping destinations.
