Genoa is the sixth largest city and the second largest port in Italy. It is an economic, shipping, steel, and financial hub. The city is popularly known as La Superba due to its glorious historic marvels and architectural landmarks.
Climate: Genoa has a temperate climate with warm, dry summers and cool winters. Average winter temperature is around 54°F (12°C) and average summer temperature is around 82°F (27°C). September to January is the rainy season. The best time to visit Genoa is spring.
Food: Genoese cuisine includes many stalwarts like pesto sauce, focaccia, farinata, stockfish, salsa di noci (walnut sauce), soups like minestrone, ciuppin, buridda, and zemin. You can relish Italian wonders like Ravioli al sugo, Pansoti di rapallo (round ravioli filled with hard-boiled egg, spinach and grated cheese), Cappon magro, Pandolce and Sacripantina. It is also known for its cheese filled pizza crust.
Culture: Genoa’s culture is steeped in history. The beautiful frescos, paintings, sculptures and other works of art are proudly displayed in the city’s museums, palaces, villas, art galleries and piazzas. Genoa is the birthplace of the Ligurian School of Painting. It also has a rich musical tradition of and hosts many festivals around the year.
History and Architecture: For the longest time, Genoa was an independent city-state under the Holy Roman Emperor. In 1797, under pressure from Napoleon, it became a French protectorate called the Ligurian Republic. It was eventually annexed by the French in 1805. In the 19th century and the early 20th century, Genoa rose to prominence as a steel and shipbuilding centre. During the Second World War, it suffered heavy damage. The city’s architecture is historic and breathtaking. Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo styles are the most evident. They can be seen in Genoa Cathedral, the Church of Gesù and the Church of San Donato, San Matteo Square, and San Lorenzo Cathedral.
Shopping: Genoa is known for its fine silver and gold filigree jewellery, ceramic pottery, handmade lace, velvet, carved olive wood items, and marble stone goods. You can head to Via Soziglia to shop for these items. Or visit the designer stores at Via Luccoli and Via XX Settembre. To indulge your shoe fetish, head to Via Davide Chiossone.
Sightseeing in Genoa: St. Lawrence Cathedral, San Donato, Sant'Agostino, Oratory of San Giacomo della Marina, Santo Stefano, San Torpete and the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato, Piazza De Ferrari, Opera and the Palace of the Doges, and Strada Nuova offer a delightful melange of sights.
