ISTANBUL INFORMATION GUIDE

If you ask ten people for the capital of Turkey, at least nine would say that it is Istanbul. However, the capital of Turkey is Ankara, not Istanbul. Istanbul, just like the country it belongs to, lies partly in Asia and partly in Europe, giving us a unique blend of the two cultures these geographically different parts represent. The city is the nation’s cultural, economic, and historical centre, nonetheless.

Climate
Due to the city’s location on a transitional climate zone, it experiences different climates along different areas. The northern parts experience twice more the rain than what can be witnessed in the southern parts. While some areas can be classified as tropical, some average at freezing points during winter months. The city is always humid, sometimes as high as 80% during most mornings.

Food
Istanbul is a hub for Turkish cuisine such as kebabs. Seafood is the staple food in the city. The oldest and the most famous restaurants serving this cuisine are open along the shores of the Bosphorus. If you do not have a liking for seafood or Turkish cuisine, you can find comfort in multi-cuisine restaurants near and around four districts in particular – Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Şişli, and Kadıköy.

Culture
Istanbul is the country’s most culturally rich city. The Hagia Sophia is a reminder of the transition of the city’s culture and the influence of its rulers. The culture in the city has always leaned towards art, the glimpses of which can be seen in the city’s museums. Today, the city is home to many multi-national companies and is home to a population with a global citizen outlook.

History and Architecture
Istanbul had been an active part of Byzantine and Ottoman rule, serving as the capital of both these empires. After the Turks shifted their focus to Ankara, the development of this city lay still for quite a bit of time. However, today Istanbul is a developed city with many proud monuments, specially its museums. Most buildings in old Istanbul are built on Ottoman architecture bases, such as the Topkapi Palace, while those in Istanbul modern are as contemporary as they can get.

Shopping
Istanbul is what you can call a shopper’s paradise; there’s something for every kind of shopper. Akmerkez mall was awarded Europe's and World’s best. Similarly, Istanbul Cevahir has been the continent's biggest. On the other hand, for a local or authentic shopping experience, you can visit The Grand Bazaar, open and functioning since 1461.

Sightseeing in Istanbul:
Basilica Cistern, Aya Sofya, Topkapi Palace, Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamam, Blue Mosque, Istanbul Archaeology Museums, Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, Süleymaniye Mosque, Chora Church, and Galata Tower are some of the places you must visit when you are in Istanbul.

Getting to and fro from the airport

Istanbul airport sees more tourists than most airports in the country. With such an overwhelming response, the airport is well-organized into public and private transport options. Depending on how much you can spend, you can either opt for a public bus or a private care. The options are in plenty. Similarly, these options are also available while traveling to the airport from other parts of the country.
