Hamburg holds the proud distinction of being Germany’s second largest city. Nestled on the banks of River Elbe, it is known as the Green City and is home to over 1400 parks and gardens. It straddles two artificial lakes and is said to have more bridges than Venice.
Climate:Hamburg has an oceanic climate. Summers are warm and rainy, with brief spells of sunshine. Winters are cold, with temperatures often dropping to 28ºF (-2ºC). July and August are the warmest months and January is the coldest. Spring is the best time to visit the city.
Food:Stubenküken and Schwarzsauer are the typical dishes of Hamburg. Herring based dishes are a must try. So is the Räucheraal or smoked eel. Steckrübeneintopf, Labskaus and Aalsuppe are delicious stews that can you sample. You can also try the world famous baked goods and beer of the city.
Culture:The city’s cultural scene offers a great diversity. The city is home to many museums and is an art lover’s dream come true. True to its cosmopolitan character, it celebrates many festivals, prominent of them being Easter Street Festival, Eppendorfer Landstrasse Festival and St. Georg Festival, when the city’s streets are a riot of colours, sights, and sounds.
History and Architecture:In the late twelfth century, Adolf III of Holstein received a charter from the Holy Roman Emperor that gave the city a court as well as fishing rights. Soon, Hamburg Valdemar II of Denmark occupied the city. In the sixteenth century, it became the imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. Over time, it was occupied by Danish and French forces. Finally, it became part of the mighty German Empire. The architecture of the city bears testimony to its rich heritage and offers a great mix of modern and traditional styles. Some of the prime examples are The Old Elbe Tunnel, Chilehaus, Speicherstadt, and Elbphilarmonie.
Shopping:The premier shopping districts in the city include Colonnaden, Monckebergstrasse, and Spitalerstrasse. They are a shopper’s delight and are lined with big stores and quaint boutiques selling everything from clothes to jewellery to watches. If you are looking for vintage clothing or second hand goods, flea markets are a plenty.
Sightseeing in Hamburg:There is so much to see in the city. Topping the list is Hamburg Warehouse Complex, Planten un Blomen, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Museum of Hamburg History, and Altona Fish Market.

You can take the S-Bahn into the city. Buses ply passengers to the city centre regularly. Taxis are easily available outside all terminals.
