Larnaca is a beautiful city on the southern coast of Cyprus and the capital of the Larnaca district. It is famous for its beautiful sea front, medieval fort and charming buildings.
Climate: Larnaca’s climate is classified as dry summer sub-tropical and also known as Mediterranean. In summer, the average temperature is 32 °C, while in winter (January) it can go as low as 7 °C. Rainfall is minimal and occurs in winter. It’s always a good time to visit the city.
Food: The main dishes of Larnaca have beans such as fasolaki (French beans cooked in red wine with lamb), and louvi me lahana (black-eyed beans with chard). The main appetizers are potato salad, kohlrabi salad and hot grilled black olives. Do try the delicious Cyprus village sausage and sheftalia, dolmades and keftedes, kolokassi in tomato sauce and the aubergine-based dishes. Baked or grilled lamb (souvla) is also a part of the cuisine and so is fish.
Culture: Larnaca has a theatre and an art gallery, which are operated by the municipality. The Cornaro Institute is a cultural centre in Old Town which stages contemporary art exhibitions and other cultural events. The local institutions like the Municipal Wind Orchestra are very important. Do enjoy the local festival called Kataklysmos or the Festival of the Flood, celebrated in early summer with many cultural events. The festival used to last for a week, but with increasing stalls, rides and temporary restaurants, it has been extended to three weeks.
History and Architecture: The former city-kingdom of Kition was originally established in the 13th century BC. It was conquered in the first millennium BC by the Assyrian Empire and then by Egypt. Kition was part of the Persian or Achaemenid Empire. In 450 BC, the Athenian general Cimon died at sea, while militarily supporting the revolt against Persia's rule over Cyprus. The city's landmarks are the Church of Saint Lazarus, the Catacomb of Phaneromeni Church, Hala Sultan Tekke, the Kamares Aqueduct and the Fort of Larnaca. Do visit the Foinikoudes which is the promenade along Athenon Avenue on the seafront.
Shopping: Larnaca has many large shopping centers and boutiques for the swish set. It is a great place to buy Cypriot jewellery, pottery, silver work and hand made lace. Head to the Zenon Kiteos Street to check out the small shops and the local delights. Plus, the street has many big brands as well, so you can shop to your heart’s content.
