Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is bustling metropolis. It is the political, economic, educational, and cultural hub of the country. With a treasure trove of historic buildings, modern skyscrapers, swanky malls, and vibrant markets, it is emerging as a popular holiday destination.
Climate: Taipei has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are long, hot and humid. Rainstorms and typhoons are common during the season. Winters are warm and foggy. Summer temperatures average at 26 degree Celsius and winter temperatures hover above 10 degree Celsius.
Food: The city’s Pork Xiao Long Bao, Triangle Fish, Sesame Bread with Omelette, Beef Noodle Soup, Double Layer Roll Sausage, Fern Shoot Salad, Frog and Fried Eel Noodles, and Cod with Mushrooms are worth sampling.
Culture: The city has a fun, modern vibe. It celebrates many festivals. New Year's Eve is marked by parades, outdoor concerts, and street shows. Its traditional side comes to the fore during the Lantern Festival when thousands of beautiful lanterns light up the sky. Other festivals include Double Ten Day, Ancestors Day (Tomb-Sweeping Day), Dragon Boat Festival; Ghost Festival, and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
History and Architecture: The region used to be inhabited by Ketagalan plains’ aborigines. It saw large scale Han immigration. In the early 18th century under Qing Dynasty rule, the area began to be developed. The Qing dynasty made it the capital of Taiwan Province in 1886. Japan acquired Taiwan in 1895 under the Treaty of Shimonoseki. The period saw a great deal of urban planning and extensive railroad links. After Japan’s surrender in World War II, the Republic of China took over Taiwan. Taipei is home to many cultural landmarks - Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Dalongdong Baoan Temple, Hsing Tian Kong, Mengjia Longshan Temple, National Palace Museum, Presidential Office Building, to name a few.
Shopping: The city is a bargain hunter’s paradise.The main shopping districts include Simending, Jhongsiao and Sinyi.Shihlin Night Market is an ideal bet to buy clothes, DVDs and electronics. Wu-fen-pu wholesale garment market and Guanghua Commercial Plaza are not far behind. Jade and Chinese shou-shan stones make for great souvenirs.
Sightseeing in Taipei: Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Park, Longshan Temple, National Palace Museum, Shilin Night Market, Taipei 101, and Taipei Zoo are the top attractions.
