Romantic Venice! The world- famous city lies in northeastern Italy on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. A World Heritage Site, the city is famed for its beauty, art and architecture.

 

Climate:Venice has a humid subtropical climate with cool winters and very warm summers. The average temperature in January is 3.3 °C and in July it is 23.0 °C. Rainfall happens throughout the year, and average rain is around 29.4 inches.

 

Food: Thecuisine of Venice is mainly about seafood, but also includes vegetables, fruits, rice, game and polenta. The key dishes include sarde in saor - sardines marinated in order to preserve them for long; risi e bisi, rice, peas and ham; fegato alla veneziana, Venetian-style liver; risotto with cuttlefish, blackened from the ink; cicchetti, refined and delicious tidbits antipasti, appetizers and prosecco, an effervescent, mildly sweet wine. Do also try the marinated eel, cookies with almonds and pistachio nuts and the shortbread.

 

Culture: Tourism is the mainstay of the Venetian economy. It is considered as the most beautiful city in the world. Venice is the seat of fashion, art and culture in the region. It is the centre of international conferences and festivals such as the prestigious Venice Biennale and the Venice Film Festival. Plus, it is famous for its theatrical, cultural, cinematic, artistic and musical productions. The beautiful buildings include the St Mark's Basilica, the Grand Canal, the Piazza San Marco and the Lido di Venezia. A trip on the classical Venetian boat called the gondola is a must. The boats are commonly used by tourists, or for weddings and funerals.

 

History and Architecture:Venice derives its name from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century BC. The city was the capital of the Republic of Venice. It was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period. It was a wealthy city and also the center of commerce and traded in silk, grain, spices and art from the 13th to the 17th century. The architecture of the city is called Venetian Gothic and it combines the use of the Gothic lancet arch with Byzantine and Ottoman influences. The notable buildings are the Doge's Palace, the Ca' d'Oro etc. The city also has several Renaissance and Baroque buildings.

 

Shopping: Do visit theMercerie running north between Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge for a bit of shopping. For expensive clothes and gift boutiques, head to Calle Larga XXII Marzo, the street that begins west of Piazza San Marco and goes to the Campo Santo Stefano near the Accademia. The Frezzeria, west of the piazza and close to Piazza San Marco, is a great place to buy souvenir and chic clothes.

Sightseeing in Venice: Piazza San Marco, followed by a view of the city, then the Grand Canal, the interior of La Fenice and, finally, the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore.

 

Getting to and fro from the airport

You can get to Venice from Marco Polo Airport either by sea or land. Water transfer to the city is a ten minute walk from the arrivals to the dock areas. But if you have a lot of luggage you can take a taxi to your destination. Use the Airport Link service to get to the center of the city or if you want to get to your hotel, it is best to use the private water taxis. Land taxis and buses are also available directly on the left outside the airport exit.
