HALIFAX INFORMATION GUIDE:
The native Mi’kmaq art, music, language and spirituality resonate through Halifax, the capital of the rugged sea-swept Nova Scotia peninsula. It was the French who first claimed Nova Scotia as their home in the seventeenth century: they distilled the spirit of the city and the indigenous Acadian community into the local L’Acadie wine.

Food: Halifax is privy to the best of Canadian maritime cuisine. Clam and crab suppers and lobster suppers are washed down by brews from breweries, wineries and distillers that capture the essence of local ingredients. Donair, a pita sandwich of spiced and browned lamb or beef, hung around a spit is served souvlaki style with donair sauce (evaporated milk with lemon juice).
Culture: After the French, came Gaelic speakers, then New England planters, Black Loyalists from the US and the Maroons of Jamaica to this maritime city. The lives of these peoples are written inits stage plays, music, movies and art, inspired by its history, culture and landscape. Halifax is also home to the only mouth blown hand cut crystal makers in North America, NovaScotian crystal. Meanwhile, the Cabot Trail has an artisan loop that features pottery, glass, wood, photography, leather and kilt makers.
History and Architecture: The Halifax Central Library shines as a glass and steel beacon downtown. Height restrictions prevent buildings from obstructing the line of vision between Citadel Hill and Halifax Harbor. This results in buildings with unusual shapes and locations. The South End has grand Victorian houses while the West End and North End have blocks of well preserved wooden residential houses with the ‘Halifax Porch.’
Shopping: Pick up visual arts, sculpture, wood, glass, quilting and specialty foods in the urban shopping areas and go where the locals go. Browse large galleries or small artisan studios and visit them up close. TheSouth Shore is home to hand crafted pewter, potters, rug hookers and stained glass artists.
