The capital of West Bengal, Kolkata is rich in culture, art and cuisine. It is usually referred to as the City of Joy as well as the cultural capital of India. Some very prominent people in our Indian history belong to this beautiful city. Earlier, it was referred to as Calcutta, but in 2001 it was renamed to Kolkata. The city is the financial hub of the North East of India.

Climate

The city has a tropical wet-and-dry climate. On an average the temperature is between 19 to 30 degrees Celsius. Summers, that is March to June, are humid and quite hot. In May; however, the temperatures may exceed to 40 degrees Celsius. In June, the city often faces heavy rainfall and dusty squalls followed by thunderstorms. Winters are generally pleasant with December and January being the coldest.

Culture

Whether its art or literature, Kolkata has a deep-rooted history filled with revolutions. Some of the most famous people like Rabanindranath Tagore, Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Vivekananda and Satyajit Ray belong to this city. You should definitely visit the museums when you are in the city, so that you can see the artefacts and what makes Kolkata truly rich in culture and heritage. The film industry of Kolkata is also very famous and respected across the globe. If you travel from Lucknow to Kolkata during September to October, you'll find the entire city in a festive mood. The Durga Puja is a 9-day festival which is followed by Dussehra.

Cuisine

Kolkata is famous for its rice and fish preparation. If you love rolls, you must try kathi rolls. They come in different flavours with different fillings. The Chinese food in Chinatown is also very yummy. If you love chaat, you should try puchka, which is your panipuri but in elongated puris instead of your typical round puris. Besides this, the world famous sandhesh also belongs to Kolkata. MishtiDoi is a sweet yogurt dish that is both delicious and healthy!

Sightseeing

There are many things to see and experience in Kolkata, from the iconic Howrah bridge to Victoria Memorial Hall. If you are an animal lover, you will surely fall in love with the Sundarbans that boasts of the Royal Bengal Tiger and other wildlife. Visit the Hindu temple called Dakshineswar Kali Temple and marvel at the intricate detailing and design. The city also has a Science City, which is the largest in India. If theme parks interest you, you can hop over to Nicco Park too.

Looking for handicrafts, head over to Dakshinapan Shopping Centre. They also have fixed prices for clothes and materials. The shopping centre is located near Ghariahat Road in Dhakuria, near the flyover. Book worms can explore the Oxford Bookstore which is located on Park Street while Bara Bazaar will show you what it means to shop in chaos. The bazaar offers jewellery, spices, home décor and materials as well.
