 LANZAROTE INFORMATION GUIDE

Lanzarote is a gorgeous Spanish Island located in the easternmost part of the autonomous Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean. Located at a distance of 11 km from Fuerteventura and just over 1 km from Graciosa, Lanzarote is illustrious for its landscape beauty, alluring coastline and its underwater tunnels. 

Climate:  The Island experiences a desert type climate and enjoys pleasant climate for most of the year. When planning a Lanzarote holiday, tourists should plan to visit during the months of October to June when the Lanzarote weather is mostly cool and comfortable with average temperatures ranging between 22 to 14^oC. The months from July to September are not good for Lanzarote vacation as it is very hot and temperatures can reach up to the 40’s.

Food: Being a coastal town, fish is the staple food and is used in most of the local dishes. People of Lanzarote also use meat like pork and goat meat along with cheese, vegetables and variety of tropical fruits. Some of the local delights that the region is famous for are Sancocho (a stew) and gofio (a dish made with toasted grain flour). The region is known for their varieties of cheeses and has received prizes at both national and international competitions.

Culture: The culture of Lanzarote is very unique and is very popular for its music, literature and films. The region is immensely popular for its folk music along with Lucha Canaria, which is a unique form of wrestling and is somewhat similar to sumo wrestling. Castilian, a form of Spanish is the official language and Roman Catholicism is the most popular religion followed by majority of the people.          

History and Architecture:Considered to be the first Canary Island to be settled in, the history of the island goes back to around 1100 BC, when it was inhabited by Phoenicians. One of the major heritage and historical attraction that the island is famous for is Jameos del Agua which is a cave complex. The Castillo de San Gabrie, a 16th Century fortress is another major sightseeing place and it overlooks the Arrecife Harbour. The Wine Museum of Lanzarote, LagOmar Museum and Casa Museo y Monumento al Campesino are the important attractions on the island.

Shopping:  The Island enjoys a duty free tax status making it a shopping haven. Cigarettes, Cigars and Alcohol are the most popular items available at cheap prices. Calle Leon Y Castillo is the most popular shopping street from where you can shop for electrical goods and clothes. The Sunday market held at old Capital of Teguise is the best place to purchase hand-made table-cloths, jewellery, paintings and African wood carving.

Sightseeing in Lanzarote:   The Cactus Garden, Mirador Del Rio, La Cueva de los Verdes, Lanzarote Aquarium and El Golfo are the major natural attractions that the island is famous for. Fuerteventura and puerto del Carmen are tourist towns located close by.

The Arrecife Airport is the major airport serving the island and is located around 5 km from the city center. Bus services and taxi are available for travelling to and from the city to the airport.
