Pune is located in the southern Indian state of Maharashtra and sits on the banks of the Mutha River on the Deccan Plateau. Pune city is surrounded by verdant hills and beautiful lakes, and is known for its temperate climate. It is an upcoming city with towering skyscrapers. This city is a bastion of the Maratha empire. Magnificent forts and ancient temples are testimony to its glorious past. This city is the centre of traditional Marathi culture in which education, arts and craft and theatre are well showcased and are easily accessible to any curious visitor. The city throughout the years has gained a number of titles, such as the ‘Queen of the Deccan’ and the ‘Oxford of the East’. Not only does Pune serve as the cultural capital of Maharashtra but it also acts as an important commercial centre.
What to See and Do
There are a host of excellent museums such as the Raja Dinkar Kelkar which does a good job of showcasing the history, culture and customs of the people of Maharashtra. The Shaniwar Wada is a dazzling palace built in 1730 but was destroyed by a fire in the 1800s. The mammoth structure of the remaining walls are a testimony to Maratha culture. Its architectural designs show influences of Mughal and Maratha artistic styles. The building has become a symbol of Maratha culture and every night there is an impressive ‘Light & Sound Show” which tells of the history of the Maratha empire and the significance of the Shaniwar Wada.
New Age followers will want to explore the world-renowned Osho International Meditation Resort founded by Bhagwan Rajneesh. The picturesque Parvati Hill is a favourite relaxation spot with residents. Atop the hill lies the Parvati Temple, an important destination for Hindus.
Getting Around
Travel from the airport to the city can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic. The best means of getting to Pune City Centre is to hire a taxi from the taxi booth at the arrivals entrance of the airport. Auto rickshaws also operate out of the airport and are generally cheaper. The airport does have a local bus service but it is usually crowded. We would recommend taking a taxi or even a rickshaw!
Pune has extensive and inexpensive city buses although the local buses are known to be crowded and smoky. The city has an army of auto rickshaws although there are a limited amount of prepaid rickshaw stands located around the city. It is best to make sure that they run the meter and know where they are going and it’s probably wise to expect to pay a little extra.
