Aer Lingus is the flag carrier or the national airline of the nation of Ireland. Primarily operating a fleet of Airbus carriers, Aer Lingus is the oldest and the second largest airline carrier in Ireland and it serves the regions of Europe, North America, North Africa and Turkey. Aer Lingus is headquartered in Dublin in Ireland.

Aer Lingus was earlier owned primarily by the state of Ireland, accounting for 85% of ownership before the stocks of the company were floated on both the London and the Dublin Stock Exchanges in 2006. Consequently, Ryanair, a low cost airline carrier from Ireland and also the biggest in the nation came to own over 29% of the ownership of Aer Lingus and the state’s ownership dropped down to 25%. History

Aer Lingus was formed in the year 1936 on the 15th of April and it initially operated alongside the Blackpool and West Coast Air Services under the name Irish Sea Airways. Soon, in the very same year on the 22nd of May 1936, Aer Lingus was officially registered as an individual airline entity and it began its first service carrying a six seater biplane from Dublin to Bristol on the 27th of May 1936. Aer Lingus is a derivation from the Irish term Aer Loingeas which literally means Air Fleet.

Fleet

As of today, all of Aer Lingus’ fleet consists of Airbus carriers. Serving 77 destinations across different parts of the world, Aer Lingus has a fleet size of 47 air carriers. Apart from these, Aer Lingus also has three Boeing 757 aircrafts providing service under a damp lease agreement with Air Contractors.

The history of the fleet of air carriers that have been used earlier by Aer Lingus include Boeings, Lockheed Constellations, Airspeed Consul, Aviation Traders Carvair, Fokker, Short, Vickers and de Havilland throughout the many years of its existence and service.

Aer Lingus is a well-established and reputed airline carrier and it has been doing very well since the time it started operations. Some of the awards and accolades that Aer Lingus has won over the years include the following:

The airline carrier has interlined flying agreements with a number of other international carriers including JetBlue Airways, Etihad Airways as well as United Airlines.
