Air Austral Flights

Fly Reunion Style with Air Austral

Although the name may be a little misleading, Air Austral is actually an airline carrier form France based in Saint Marie, Reunion. The carrier has only on hub of operations at Roland Garros Airport. Air Austral is one of the smaller carriers catering only to 12 destinations in total, with the help of a fleet composed of 9 aircrafts. The airline has one subsidiary called Ewa Air and caters to both domestic and international destinations especially in South Africa, India, Thailand and some in the Indian Ocean.

The airline was established in 1974 under the name Reunion Air Services and was the first commercial airline in Reunion. The company was transformed to Air Reunion in 1986, and by then it had started fling on a regular route. In 1990 it was bought by Sematra, which was mostly owned by local councils and turned into Air Austral. That was the same year the company bought its first Boeing 737-500. In the next 10 years other models of planes joined the fleet and more destinations were added. 2003 was a breakthrough year for Air Austral as it established its first long haul flight, connecting Reunion to Paris. Things went up from there until 2012 when the company was unable to pay for a Boeing 777-200LR it had commissioned. After that, only a few months away it canceled orders on two Airbus models.

Air Austral fleet is comprised of mostly Boeing models with the addition of an ATR model and has an average age of about 6 years, making it a rather young fleet. The fleet should have been joined by 2 Airbus crafts as well, however due to financial difficulties the order were canceled. Air Austral has the following aircrafts in its fleet:

·         ATR 72-500 – 2 units

·         Boeing 737-800 – 2 units

·         Boeing 777-200LR – 1 unit

·         Boeing 777-300ER – 3 units

Being such a small carrier in a world of titans it is very hard for Air Austral to win any awards on a global level. However it came in at number 10 in 2014 in the top of the Best Airlines in Africa. This rating is done by World Airline Awards website, which is a subdivision of Skytrax, one of the most important rating systems in this domain.
