Jammu Airport is also commonly referred to as Satwari Airport. It is the only airport in Jammu, in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The airport mostly serves the domestic market, and operates flights to places in India like Delhi, Leh, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and more. Getting Around

The airport is located 8 kilometres from the city, and several modes of transport are available to get you to downtown Jammu. Simply hail a taxi from outside the airport terminal, and travel directly to the city centre. Alternatively, board the bus from Jammu Airport towards the main bus stand, located approximately 10 kilometres away. There, transit to another bus heading to your desired destination in the city. Also situated 10 kilometres from the airport is the railway station, easily reached by taxi. Getting around by rail is fast and convenient.

Within Jammu, bus services take you to most destinations in the state. The bus company, JKSRTC, organises tours to Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Yusmarg, Ular Lake, and even city tours if you would just like to explore Jammu city. Otherwise, take the 4WD jeeps to get around. These jeep services are slightly more expensive than the buses, but help travellers reach more locations given their more extensive network.

What to See & Do

The Jammu region is nestled between the hilly Himalayan Mountains and the Punjab plains. It is also locally called Duggardesh, and is one of the most significant subdivisions of the state out of three. The city of Jammu is the winter capital and largest city in the northernmost state of India. Tourists are drawn to this lovely cultural city, and often visit Jammu to explore the Kashmir valley.

At the heart of Jammu lies the majestic Raghunath Mandir, a temple dedicated to the revered Shri Rama who is revered by Hindus. The interior walls of the temple are adorned with gold, and galleries showcase sacred saligrams (ammonite fossils) symbolising deities of the Hindu pantheon. Another significant religious site is the Gupawala Mandir, a small labyrinth of cave-tunnels comprising glitteringly colourful Krishna and Shiva caves.

Marvel at the raja’s canopied gold throne in the Amar Mahal, a grand castle-style tower whose design reveals a distinct European influence. View the scenery from above with a cocktail as a refresher, in the air-conditioned Polo Lounge bar of the Hari Niwas Palace Hotel. Visit the Mubarak Mandi, the former palace of Jammu’s royalty in the 19th century. In the palace, marvel at the artefacts in the Dogra Art Gallery, housed in the Durbar Hall. The ancient bronzes, armaments, instruments, 9th-century carvings and Kushan coins are interesting sights to behold. Explore the Bahu Fort, said to be the oldest edifice in Jammu. The imposing fort stands on a rock face on the left bank of River Tawi. Walk through the terraced garden, Bagh-e-Bahu, constructed in addition to the fort surrounding the main building. The fort, along with the Bahu temple, commands a great scenic view of the city.

Nature lovers should head to Gulmarg, famous for its highland golf course and ski resort that has the highest gondola in the world. Ski down from a dizzying height of 4,050 metres. Another place boasting superb scenery is Sonamarg, called the “Meadow of gold”. Enjoy the breathtaking view of snow-capped mountains.
