Nestled on the banks of the RaptiRiver, Gorakhpur is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. The city is a religious, literary, and educational hub. Goraknath Temple, Gita Press – the world's largest publisher of Hindu religious texts, and Gorakhpur University draw scores of visitors around the year. The road route connecting New Delhi with Kathmandu passes through Gorakhpur.
Climate: The city has a humid subtropical climate and experiences hot summers and cool winters. In summers, temperatures can go up to 37 degree Celsius and during winters, temperatures plummet to 9 degree Celsius. Spring is the best time to visit.
Food: Relish local favourites such as platters of Galawati and Kakori kababs as well as Khaja, a delicious dessert made especially during festivals.
Culture: The city sports a beautiful spiritual vibe. The people of the city are religious and observe many traditions and customs. The biggest festivals and fairs are Khichadi Mela, month long Makar Sankranti fair, Tarkulha Devi Mela, and Bhudia Mai Mandir Navratri Mela.
History and Architecture: During the Vedic times, the region was ruled by the mighty Iksvaku dynasty. It was conquered by Magadha's Nanda Dynasty in the 4th century BC. Subsequently, Gorakhpur came under Maurya, Shunga, Kushana, Gupta and Harsha empires. During the medieval times, it was home to the legendary Hindu saint Gorakhnath. In 1803, it came under British control. It was one of the key centres during the 1857 uprising, and later, the Indian independence movement. The city is home to beautiful temples and the architecture is heavily inspired by spiritual elements. It is widely believed that Lord Gautama Buddha attained Parinirvana and was cremated in Kushinagar, a place near Gorakhpur.
