Nagoya is the capital of Japan’s Aichi Prefecture. It is the largest city in the Chubu region and is a manufacturing and shipping hub. Located on the Pacific Coast, the city’s name translates to ‘Peaceful’ in the local language.

History and Architecture: The region used to be ruled by powerful warlords. In 1610, Tokugawa Ieyasu moved the capital of Owari Province closer to this region. It saw rapid expansion during the Tokugawa period. Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine were built during this time and attracted large-scale migration. A town developed around the temple. Soon, Nagoya became an industrial hub. During the Meiji Restoration, the government changed from family to bureaucratic rule. Nagoya was officially declared a city in 1889. Nagoya was the target of US air raids during World War II. The city has a wealth of architectural marvels. The notable historic buildings are Nagoya Castle, Nagoya City Archives, Nagoya City Hall Aichi Prefectural Office, Futaba Museum, the former residences of Sasuke Toyoda and Tetsujiro Haruta as well as the Chikaramachi Catholic Church.
Shopping: Osu shopping district is heaven sent for shopaholics. Then there are numerous malls where you can indulge in your passion for local and international brands. Akamon Dori is a good bet for electronics. You can also try the Temple Markets. Be sure to pick up classic souvenirs like Samurai swords and armour.
