TEL AVIV INFORMATION GUIDE

Tel Avis is the second largest city in Israel and located on the Mediterranean coast in the central-west of the country. It was declared aUNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, with the world's largest concentration of Bauhaus buildings.

 

Climate:Tel Aviv has a subtropical climate with hot humid summers and generally mild winters with cool spells. The average annual temperature in January, the coldest month, is 18 °C. In August, the warmest month, it has an average high of 30 °C and a low of 22 °C. Summer lasts about six months from May to October.

 

Food:Tel Aviv’s cuisine is influenced by the Middle Eastern and the Mediterranean cuisines. It is famous for its wide variety of world-class restaurants, offering traditional Israeli dishes as well as international fare. More than 100 sushi restaurants, the third highest concentration in the world, are present in the city. Do taste the traditional dishes like the falafel, hummus, shawarma, pita, couscous and the shakshouka. Try the dessert specialties also, the most well- known is the Halva ice cream traditionally topped with date syrup and pistachios.

 

Culture: Tel Aviv is a modern city with an ethnically diverse culture. The city is known as "The City that Never Sleeps" and a party capital. It has a lively nightlife, dynamic atmosphere and a famous 24-hour culture. It is the country's financial capital and a major performing arts and business center. Tel Aviv has the third-largest economy in the Middle East after Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Jews of all backgrounds form 91.8 percent of the population, Muslims and Arab Christians make- up 4.2 percent.

 

History and Architecture: Tel Aviv was founded by the Jewish community on the outskirts of the ancient port city of Jaffa in 1909. Immigration by Jewish refugees led to the growth of city. Both were merged into a single municipality in 1950, two years after the establishment of  Israel. Tel Aviv was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. It is home to different architectural styles that represent periods in its history. The early architecture consisted largely of European-style single-story houses with red-tiled roofs. Neve Tzedek, the first neighborhood to be constructed outside of Jaffa is characterised by two-story sandstone buildings. By the 1920s, a new eclectic Orientalist style came into being.

 

Shopping: Do visit theDizengoff Centre, Dizengoff Street and King George Street which is the famous Tel Avivian shopping area. Check out Hamashbir which stocks everything you need, including clothes from new designers' collections. Also, check out the Kikar Hamedina which is brimming with many expensive stores, including all the international favourites like Gucci, Prada and Yves Saint Laurent. You can also find a collection of Israeli designers here. For old-world charm, take a trip to the famous Jaffa flea market for jewellery and furniture.

 

Sightseeeing in Tel Aviv: Tel Aviv has many walking tours, bus tours and architecture tours. Do visit its beaches which are the city's cultural and tourist hub and the Hayarkon Park, the most visited urban park in Israel. Other parks within city limits include Charles Clore Park, Independence Park, Meir Park and Dubnow Park. 

 

Getting to and fro from the airport

You should book a taxi at the airport where you will get a cheaper rate compared to the ones standing outside. At your hotel, ask them to book a taxi in advance but it may be more expensive than the regular ones. There is no shuttle or shared taxi from the airport to Tel Avis. Trains are another good option.
