History and Architecture:Aboriginal people lived in Vancouver from 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. The original settlement, was named Gastown, grew up on clear cuts on the west edge of the Hastings Mill logging sawmill's property. As more enterprises grew, the area was named Vancouver in 1866. As it was a large natural seaport, it soon became a vital link in the trade route between the Orient, Eastern Canada and Europe. Vancouver has many modern buildings in the downtown area, including the Harbour Centre, the Vancouver Law Courts and the surrounding plaza known as Robson Square, the Vancouver Library Square and the Woodward's Building Redevelopment.
