The Goa International Airport, more commonly known as Dabolim airport is located in the town of Dabolim, around 23 km from Margao and 30 km from the capital city, Panaji. Built in the 1950’s, the airport served as a main hub for the local airline TAIP Transportes Aéreos da Índia Portuguesa, which on a regular schedule served Daman & Diu, Karachi,Mozambique, Timor and other destinations. It came under the control of Indian Navy only in the year 1961.
Overview
Goa receives almost 700 international flights per year, which accounts for 90% of the country’s international charter tourist flights. Dabolim's air traffic control is managed by the Indian Navy. The new terminal at Goa was inaugurated on 3rd December, 2013. At present the airport has the capacity of holding 2,750 peak hour passengers and is equipped with 11 aerobridges. The airport features an in-line baggage scanning system and a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant. There are two terminals with 64 check-in counters, 16 immigration counters for departures, 9 immigration counters for arrivals, 12 security check booths and six customs counters. Goa airport ranks among the top ten in the country in terms of passenger traffic. The airport is closed from 8:30 am till 1:00 pm five days a week, as military flight training is conducted here. As a result charters carrying international tourists during the season use the freer civil aviation regimes on weekends and in the early morning hours.
Terminals
Domestic Terminal- Less than a dozen domestic flights to Goa are operational. Goa is connected to a limited number of cities via air and cheap flights from Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata are available. Some of the domestic flight operators are SpiceJet, IndiGo, Jet airways, GoAir and Air India. Facilities including snack bar, vending machine, international money exchange and baggage wrapping machine among others are available at the domestic terminal.
International Terminal - The International terminal at Goa International Airport receives limited number of scheduled international flights as large number of charter flights are used by international passengers. Several European charter airlines fly to Goa seasonally, typically between November and May. Flights from the UK (London Gatwick & Manchester Airport) are operated by Monarch Airlines, Thomson Airways & Thomas Cook Airlines.
