History and Architecture:The city was originally built on an island of Lake Texcoco by the Aztecs in 1325. It was destroyed in 1521 during siege of Tenochtitlan and had to be rebuilt. In 1524, the municipality of Mexico City was established and in 1585, it was officially declared a city. It served as the political, administrative and financial centre of the Spanish colonial empire. After independence, the Federal District was created in 1824.Under the rule of Porfirio Díaz, Mexico City saw major expansion and urbanisation. The city’s architecture is a beacon to its halcyon days.  The Historic center of Mexico City, Xochimilco floating gardens, Plaza de la Constitución, Metropolitan Cathedral, National Palace, and Templo Mayor are some of the architectural delights.

 

Shopping: Centro Historico is a shopper’s delight. You can also try outAvenida Insurgentes, Jaurez, La Condesa and Polanco. Be sure to pick up souvenirs like Talavera tiles and ceramics, embroidered garments, sterling silver jewellery and accessories as well as hand-woven rugs and blankets. For handicrafts, San Juan Market is ideal.

 

Sightseeing in Mexico City: The city’s historic centre,El Zocalo, Templo Mayor, Palacio de Belles Artes, Teotihuacan, Bosque de Chapultepec park, Guanajuato colonial town, San Angel, and Zona Rosa are highly recommended.
