Leh is the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh. It is a part of the Leh district that occupies an area of 45,110 square kilometres and is the second largest district in India. Thanks to its rugged terrain, awe inspiring mountains and valleys, and picturesque locales and views, Leh is a tourist hotspot.

Climate

Ladakh witnesses seasonal extremes. It is inaccessible during winters as the region receives heavy snowfall and the highways are closed. In the winter months, temperatures fall as low as -20°C. January witnesses the maximum snowfall. July is the hottest month of the year, when day temperatures soar to 25°C. May, June, July and August are the best months to visit Leh.

Food

Food in Ladakh is a blend of Tibetan, Indian and Continental cuisine. Fort Road and Zangsti road are lined with restaurants offering delectable fare. Taste the local beerTsampa that’s made using fermented barley. It keeps the body warm. Another must-sip beverage is the Butter Tea. Culture

Leh’s vibrant culture is on full display during its festivals. Wooden masts painted with symbols, colourful streamers, and rich costumes complete the picture. Hemis is the biggest monastic festival in Ladakh. Then, there is the Monkey Year Festival celebrated every 12 years. During the Dosmoche Festival in February, it is a visual treat to watch monks from different monasteries performing the Chams or mask dance. Losar or the Ladakhi New Year and Phyang Tsedup are some other festivals celebrated on a grand scale.

History and Architecture

Leh was an important pit stop on the trade routes between Tibet and Kashmir as well as India and China. Till the17th century, the region was ruled by King Sengge Namgyal and was a prosperous town. The architecture of Leh displays strong Buddhist influence as is evident in its monasteries. The sixteenth century Lamayuru Monastery, the nineteenth century Rizong monastery, the Alchi monastery, the eleventh century Sumtsek Temple, the stunning Leh Palace and the Stok Royal Palace are fine examples of Leh’s distinctive architecture.

Shopping

Leh is renowned for its Pashmina shawls and stoles as well as hand woven rugs and carpets. Tibetan handicraft items including prayer wheels, Buddhist masks and Thangka paintingsare veritable objects of art that double up as souvenirs. Traditional Ladakhi jewellery studded with turquoise is a sight to behold. Tibetan Market and Moti Market are great places to shop. Ladakh Art Palace, the Women's Alliance in Changspa, and the Tibetan Handicraft Community Showroom are some other options.

Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri Lake, Lamayuru Trek, Magnetic Hill, Nubra Valley, Diskit Gompa, Shanti Stupa, Shey Monastery, Kargil, Khardungla Pass, ancient monasteries, and Drass Valley are some of the places you must visit when you are in Leh.

Getting to and fro from the airport

Security is extremely tight at the Kushok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport. It is, however, well connected to the city. The bus station is a mere kilometer away from the airport. It takes 10 minutes to reach it on foot. Taxis are easily available outside the airport around the clock. Leh railway station is around 5.5 kilometers away.
